Karabagh Caucasian Kelims And A Rare Lion Motif Example

Karabagh Caucasian Kelims And A Rare Lion Motif Example

The Karabagh region, straddling the southern Caucasus, has long been one of the most distinctive weaving centres of the Caucasus. Its kelims are immediately recognisable: bold palettes anchored in madder red and indigo, generous fields, and a confidence of drawing rarely matched elsewhere in the region.

Among the most coveted Karabagh weavings are pictorial kelims featuring a lion at full stride. The motif draws on a long tradition of Persian and Caucasian heraldry in which the lion symbolises courage, sovereignty and protection. Each weaver interprets the animal differently, lending every example a distinct personality.

The piece illustrated here is a particularly fine example: a single muscular lion advances across a sand-coloured field, framed by a stylised garden of roses and birds. The border of red palmettes against a deep ground anchors the composition, while the long fringes attest to its traditional flat-woven construction.
